Often in this blog, we focus on the hardships of workplace accidents from the perspective of the employer and focus on how businesses can effectively prevent workplace injuries or accidents to help protect their employees. In this blog, we want to focus on the families of those workers who are injured, and highlight a special non-profit organization that is available in most states, and which has recently started a chapter in Maine. That organization is Kid’s Chance.
Kid’s Chance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that raises money and provides scholarships to children of workers who are seriously injured or killed in the course of employment. Kids’ Chance is organized as individual state chapters and is supported by a national organization called Kids’ Chance of America. This past summer, the first ever Kids’ Chance of Maine was formally organized and has begun fundraising. It plans to award its first scholarships to Maine children of seriously or fatally injured workers in 2020.
The first Kids’ Chance was started in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988 and has since grown to over 40 state chapters nationally. In the 2017 – 2018 scholarship year, Kids’ Chance organizations across the country awarded 645 individual student scholarships totaling $2,784,000. Kids’ Chance of Maine is one of the newest chapters in the country, and was formed by individual representatives of employers, organized labor, insurance companies, plaintiff attorneys, medical providers and defense attorneys in Maine. Acadia Insurance is proud to be represented on the Kids’ Chance of Maine board of directors.
The week of November 11th through the 15th has been designated Kids’ Chance Awareness Week in recognition of the important work this non-profit does, and to support the families of seriously or fatally injured workers. Kids’ Chance believes that it can make a significant difference in the lives of all children affected by workplace injuries by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals. Together, we strive to raise #MoreMoneyforMoreKids and Awareness Week is an important part of achieving that goal.
