It’s that time of the year again…  We have already set our clocks back an hour, but the nights grow darker sooner as we progress through the end of the year.  For many, it will become very dark before it’s time to leave work and head home for the day.  Although the days become darker sooner, normal evening routines continue.  Whether you are taking the dog for a walk, walking your child home from the bus stop, walking to or from a destination, going outside to get some exercise, or simply just getting some fresh air, remember to take extra precautions as daylight time shortens.

Visibility

Make yourself more easily seen by drivers on the road, and consider the following to increase your visibility:

  • Wear bright reflective clothing
  • Walk with a flashlight
  • Travel in well-lit areas whenever possible

Be Aware of your Surroundings

Some drivers may not notice you until their vehicle is directly adjacent to you.  Remember to follow normal pedestrian rules of the road, including but not limited to:

  • Walk on sidewalk or the side of the road facing traffic
  • Cross at specified crosswalks and wait for pedestrian traffic signals
  • Look out for turning vehicles that may not see you crossing
  • Do not assume a driver sees you; only cross when the oncoming vehicles come to a full stop

By increasing visibility and awareness while walking after the sun sets, you should be better protected against the dangers of walking at night.
